Hi Humans,
I hope you had a pawesome weekend!
This week, on August 26th to be precised, is “National Dog Day“. According to its Founder, Colleen Paige, “National Dog Day serves to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort”.
Yes, so many dogs in America need to be rescued. How many? According to the Humane Society of the United States, “A shelter pet is more than one in a million—he’s one in 2.7 million. That’s the number of adoptable dogs and cats who are still euthanized each year in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and too few people adopt”
The number of euthanized animals could be reduced dramatically if more people adopted pets instead of buying them. When you adopt, you save your animal and open up shelter space for another animal who might need it.
Need more reasons to adopt? Think about this: You don’t really know for sure what you are getting from the breeder: “A responsible breeder will show you pups with their mothers, but even then there is no guarantee that the puppy you are getting will have the same temperament as its parents”, says dog trainer Victoria Stilwell in her article “Why Choose Shelter Dogs“; “A lot of dogs in most private rescue groups live in foster homes, so you will have a better idea of the dog’s temperament before adoption” , she says.
And don’t forget, that many of the pets from shelters and rescues are already house- trained, which means you’re not only saving a pet’s life, you may be saving your rug.
On our show, “354 Seconds on..”, Dr. Marty Becker, America’s Veterinarian, speaks about the importance of adopting a sheltered dog.
How about you? did you adopt a shelter dog? or did you buy a dog? share with us your stories here, and we’ll be happy to share this here.
Until then, have a great week – and happy National Dog Day!!
Ron
